Twin Bunk Beds

Twin Bunk Beds

Bunk beds are bed frames which are stacked one above the other allowing more than one person to sleep in a floor space meant for one bed. This reduces the floor space used by the beds and allows maximum open floor space that can be used in other ways. Bunk beds are the most efficient way of providing sleeping facilities for many when there is limited floor space available, like in ships, army garrisons, dormitories, summer camp cabins, hostels, childrens rooms, prison cells, or university residence halls.

Four poles or pillars, one at each corner normally support bunk beds. A ladder enables the person to access the upper bed, though many creative methods are used by imaginative persons to get on top. A protective railing usually surrounds the top bed to prevent the sleeper from falling down while a curtain is used for the purpose of privacy in the lower bunk. The use of a ladder and the height of the upper bunk make them unsuitable for small children and ceiling fans are best avoided in rooms containing bunk beds.
The standard bunk bed is the king bedding comforter that has two similar beds arranged as bunks one above the other. Twin bunk beds come in a variety of sizes, types and price ranges. The economy models are usually made with metal or softwood frames. Metal wire and springs support the mattresses in these models. Also available are the expensive models made with hardwood fully loaded with accessories including drawers and shelves. As a hobby and for cost effectiveness some people make bunk beds from scratch from plans or designs that can be bought.
There are also bunk bed units and designs where the bunk beds fold into the wall when not in use. These allow you access to the complete floor space of the room and make the room look spacious and neat when the beds are tucked away into the wall.
Apart from being a boon in terms of space saving it is psychologically believed that siblings who bunk together bond together, with the bond staying strong longer. This is also been known to be true about the camaraderie among the armed forces and other services who utilize bunk beds as sleeping provisions.
A search on the internet will guide you to a vast range of twin bunk beds readily available from manufactures that you can order from or help you find great designs that you can download to make your own.
